1 - 'Whether you’re keeping a journal or writing as a meditation, it’s the same thing. What’s important is you’re having a relationship with your mind.'

Natalie Goldberg

2 - If you do not breathe through writing, if you do not cry out in writing, or sing in writing, then don’t write, because our culture has no use for it.

Anaïs Nin

3 - Journaling is like whispering to one’s self and listening at the same time.

Mina Murray

4 - You review the past to assess the present and then determine what actions are necessary to change your future. You take what you know and apply it to how you want to grow. Thus, the power of journaling.

Melissa Steginus

5 - In the journal I do not just express myself more openly than I could to any person; I create myself.”

— Susan Sontag

A note on the author of the final quote:

I had the pleasure of exchanging a couple of emails with Susan Sontag well over a decade ago during my creative and professional writing MA. I remember reaching out to her after feeling like a failure after a lecturer’s cold criticism of a piece of writing that I had vulnerably shared. To my surprise, Sontag had replied! I cherish this memory very much. She joked in the email and the laughter quickly disentangled the harm I felt in my body — I felt light and free again! The power of writing, even just in a conversational email — from a wise soul — cannot be undermined!

It’s important, especially for us powerfully sensitive womxn who are yoked to a higher purpose in this life, to have a sense of holding by a like-minded, caring and kind community.
