Guru Pushya Yoga: January’s Auspicious Full Moon in Cancer | Vedic Astrology Guidance

'I am different from ordinary people. I drink from the Great Mother’s breasts.'

— Lao Tzu, Tao Te Ching

FULL MOON IN CANCER | PUṢYA NAKSHATRA | Vedic Astrology

The Full Moon arrives on January 25th at 17:54 (GMT) in the sign of nurturing and devoted Cancer (Karka Rāśi) in the constellation of Puṣya. This area of the sky represents nourishment that is received from the mother. Puṣya means ‘to nourish,’ and among its symbols, the udders of a cow are particularly significant in highlighting the star’s sacred and enriching quality.

Lao Tzu’s brilliant philosophy above perfectly captures the energy of this time. The mother’s milky ocean is the nectar that soothes and heals our mental and emotional realities.

Puṣya is ruled by Bṛhaspati, the guru or priest of the gods, also known as expansive and sattvic Jupiter. Spiritual support is plentiful, and we are encouraged to deepen and expand knowledge that nourishes our mind and our spiritual path and purpose. This is the star of dharma, and traditionally, it is the mother who nurtures one’s dharma, making this an important time to re-align with the intentions and goals connected with our values and deep sense of purpose.

A special planetary combination known as Guru Pushya Yoga occurs on this day, which is a Thursday (Guruvāra), the day of Jupiter, who, as Bṛhaspati, lords over Puṣya and conjuncts with the Moon. Spiritual practices are highly beneficial and bear fruit at this time.

It is an ideal day to take action that supports and serves others, and a day to start something new or acquire spiritual knowledge from lineaged teachings. So, if you’ve been putting off making decisions, especially related to the spiritual callings in your life, now is an auspicious opportunity to move your plans forward.

Cancer ruled by Chandra (Moon) is exalted in January’s Guru Purnima. This watery sign offers nurturing and unconditional love and devotion, like that offered to a child. However, in the lunar mansion of Puṣya, there is also the weight and heaviness of Saturn, its planetary ruler! We are encouraged to get organised and find a way to work with our big emotions and lead with compassionate self-discipline, rather than our fluctuating moods.

Directly opposite to the moon is the Sun in Capricorn (also ruled by Saturn), who is illuminating Saturnian matters of boundaries, hard work, and rational thinking for the purpose of carrying out our responsibilities.

Which part of you requires nurturing, soothing, more nourishment, and gentleness?

Which parts of yourself require consistency in showing up and doing work in spite of emotional weight and the changing waves of the mind?

It’s time to tend to the needs of your inner child and parent yourself.

FULL MOON INTENTION
